Why are we talking about freeze hardy plants in August? Because we’ve spent the past few months removing dead plantings, replacing them, renovating, and reviving Dallas area yards as a result of February’s extended, hard freeze.

Landscaping in Texas isn’t for the faint of heart. We can have 30-degree temperature swings in one day. Summer highs regularly top 100 and winter freezes have become more the rule rather than the exception. The deep freeze of 2021 will go down in the history books as a significant event, not only for the widespread power outages but also for the vast damage and loss of well-established plants, shrubs, and trees.

We have 3 favorite words when designing landscapes: “Texas native hardy”. It’s always a solid choice to go with plants that are native to your zone and are proven winners. But if something in that category doesn’t fit your tastes, then something “freeze hardy / tolerant” is a good second choice. We’ve listed some of our favorite hardy native and freeze-tolerant options below.

We take a number of things into consideration when selecting plants for your home’s garden; directional exposure, access to full or partial sun, shade, are there tall trees above, etc. Once we determine what will thrive in an area, we then select for color, height, and texture to create a visually appealing, cohesive design.
