It's March and our mild Dallas winter is winding down so that means spring preparations are in full swing. Read on for the top 3 things you need to do in March to help your home's lawn and garden reach it's full potential for the coming warmer weather.
1) Mowing Height and Frequency Changes
The first of March means it's time to shift from biweekly mowing to every week - but remember to adjust your mower's height and mow lower the first two mowings of the spring. Note; we don't recommend scalping your lawn, just cutting a bit more than the usual recommended removal of 1/3 the length of the blade. This helps remove die off and improve sunlight each to help your lawn take off.
2) Apply Pre-Emergent
The first week of March also means it's time to apply turf pre-emergent! What's pre-emergent? It's a weedkiller (usually granular) that is applied before weed seeds emerge (i.e. germinate). Because they attack seeds before they sprout, pre-emergent granules are for use on annual weeds that finish their life cycle within one growing season. They are not effective on perennial weeds that come back from their root systems (nutsedge, Johnsongrass, dallisgrass, etc.). Commonly found brands are Team, Dimension and Halts.
